Thicket Bean
1 yr old seedling vines, tops die back and root is sold
Phaseolus polystachios
Thicket Bean, or Wild Kidney Bean, is a perennial vine related to lima beans. We're always looking for perennial alternatives for annual staple crops, and Thicket Bean has potential as a perennial bean crop. The beans are small but yields are high according to what we've read. Our seedling vines are producing pods already in year one, although it looks as of now (Late September) that they might not mature. The goal in planting these out on our land is to learn more about this plant and work with a diverse group of seedlings to select for traits we like. Some questions to guide our selection might be 'How do they taste?' 'How are the yields?' 'Do the pods shatter and expel their seeds, or do they stay closed for harvest?' If you're interested in exploring this plant with us, Thicket Bean might be for you. Our seedlings have done very well this year, filling out their trellises and eagerly seeking out new things to climb. Hardy to Zone 5.
