Multiplier Onion

3 or more bulbs for planting

Allium cepa var. aggregatum

Over the past several years we have been seeking out allium alternatives to replace the conventional biennial onions we love to eat, but find burdensome to grow. Starting onions from seed under lights indoors in early spring, then transplanting them one by one is just too much work! Alliums that can be direct seeded or propagated by division/topsets are much easier. Multiplier onions (AKA potato onions) are closely related to shallots but with a stronger flavor and and better storage life. They are primarily propagated by division, much like garlic, which is easier than starting from seed every year. Many of our plants also produce seed (although this is not guaranteed), which can be helpful for expanding your patch and creating more diversity. Multiplier onions are easy to divide in early spring, late fall, or summer when when the tops have died back. So what's the catch? Multiplier onions are smaller than standard biennial onions.
