Pawpaw
2 yr old seedling trees, 8-10 inches
Asimina triloba
Pawpaw is a small understory tree native to the eastern United States with large, tropical-tasting fruit. It is cold hardy to Zone 5. Pawpaw needs shade for the first few years of growth but can be ‘released’ later for fruiting. Shading can be achieved by planting in shade or by creating shade with boards, tree tubes, or other structures. Since these are already 2 years old, shading is only recommended for another year.
Pawpaw is the largest edible fruit indigenous to the United States. The flavor has been described as a combination of banana, mango, and pineapple.
Pawpaw seedlings put most of their energy into the taproot in their first year, and growth is slow in the first two years especially. Our two-year old seedlings are grown with ‘ultra-select pawpaw’ seed from Peaceful Heritage Nursery in Kentucky. They have partnered with Kentucky State University and many other pawpaw enthusiasts to assemble a diverse array of outstanding pawpaw genetics.
