False Indigo
1 yr old clones, around 12-16 inches
No Shipping to CT or ME
Amorpha fruticosa
This plant caught our attention while reading an article by Eric Toensmeier called “All Nitrogen Fixers Are Not Created Equal.” False indigo is a native, nitrogen-fixing shrub in the legume family that can tolerate a wide range of soil conditions, but does prefer sunny positions. We are planning to use this plant as a source for ‘chop and drop’ mulch. It responds well to coppicing/pollarding and does not sucker or spread in our experience. False indigo is often grown as an ornamental. The flowers are beautiful and attractive to pollinators. Hardy to Zone 4.
