Black Walnut
1 yr old seedling trees, limited qty, 16+ inches with girthy stems
No shipping to AK, HI, AZ, CA, TX, KS
Juglans nigra
Black Walnut is prized for its timber and tasty nuts, which can be difficult to remove from the husk/shell but well worth the effort. We use the husks for dyeing. They are full of tannins and do not require a mordant. Black walnut produces a chemical called juglone that inhibits growth around it, and while there are some useful species that can tolerate this chemical (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VeQ8Scq6HZs), we recommend planting black walnut at the edge of your food forest or in blocks dedicated to black walnut.
Seed for our trees comes from Grimo Nut Nursery. The growth in just one year can only be described as 'wow'--such large and robust seedlings. Here is what Grimo has to say about the mother tree, 'Grimo 108H':The tree is hardy, vigorous and annually productive. The nut is large and cracks out large pieces. Suited for climate zones 5b-8.
